Hackers have found a new trick to break into Instagram accounts. They are using Meta's artificial intelligence chatbots, the same AI tools Meta created, to help them crack passwords and take over accounts. This represents a concerning twist where the company's own technology is being turned against its users. If you or anyone in your family uses Instagram, your account could be at risk. The hackers are specifically targeting Instagram users by exploiting Meta's AI systems.

When they gain access to an account, they can lock you out, steal personal information, post content pretending to be you, or message your friends and family to scam them. You should take these steps right now to protect your Instagram account:

    1. Change your Instagram password to something strong and unique that you don't use anywhere else.
    2. Turn on two-factor authentication in Instagram settings under Security. This adds an extra code you need to enter when logging in.
    3. Check your email for any password reset requests you didn't make.
    4. Review which devices are logged into your account by going to Settings, then Security, then Login Activity. Remove any devices you don't recognize. To stay protected long term, never use the same password on multiple websites or apps. Consider using a password manager to keep track of different passwords for each account. Check your Instagram login activity regularly, at least once a month. Teach your kids that if they ever get locked out of their account unexpectedly, they should tell you immediately so you can act fast to recover it.
