This past week saw several cybersecurity problems affecting everyday internet users. Issues included a serious flaw in the Chrome web browser, problems with certain VPN services, security weaknesses in macOS computers, and criminals taking advantage of old, forgotten software that companies never properly shut down. The common thread is that outdated tools and software continue to create opportunities for attackers. If your family uses Google Chrome for web browsing, Apple computers, or VPN services, you could be affected by one or more of these issues. The Chrome problem is particularly important because Chrome is one of the most popular web browsers in the world.
If you use older software or apps that you have not updated in a while, those could also pose risks. Take action today with these steps: First, open Google Chrome, click the three dots in the upper right corner, go to Help, then About Google Chrome. Let it update to the latest version. Second, if you use a Mac computer, go to System Settings, click General, then Software Update, and install any available updates. Third, look through the apps on all your family's devices and delete anything you no longer use. Fourth, turn on automatic updates wherever possible so you do not have to remember to do this manually. Make updates a monthly family habit. Pick the first Sunday of each month and spend 15 minutes updating all devices: phones, tablets, computers, and even smart TVs. Most security problems happen because people keep using old software with known weaknesses. Criminals know which old versions have problems and specifically target people who have not updated. Staying current with updates is one of the single most effective ways to protect your family online.
