Overview
Catfishing involves creating fake online identities to deceive others, typically on dating platforms and social media. Catfishers use stolen photos and fabricated life stories to build emotional connections, eventually exploiting their victims for money, personal information, or other purposes. With AI-generated photos and deepfake technology, catfishing has become increasingly sophisticated and harder to detect.
How This Scam Works
Scammers create attractive profiles using stolen photos and carefully crafted backstories on dating apps and social media.
They invest weeks or months building emotional connections through frequent messaging, calls, and video chats (often with excuses for not using video).
Once trust is established, they create emergencies requiring financial help, such as medical bills, travel costs, or business problems.
AI-generated photos and deepfake video technology make fake identities increasingly convincing and difficult to detect.

Real Scam Examples
These are examples of messages used in this type of scam.
I feel like we have a real connection. I have never felt this way about anyone before. I wish I could be with you right now, but I am stationed overseas for another 6 months. I just found out my mother needs surgery and I do not have access to my bank account from here. Could you help me with $2,000? I will pay you back as soon as I get home.
Hi! I came across your profile and I love your energy. I am a petroleum engineer working on an oil rig off the coast of Scotland. It gets lonely out here. I would love to get to know you better. Can we chat on WhatsApp?
How to Protect Yourself
1Reverse image search profile photos
Use Google reverse image search or TinEye to check if the person's photos appear elsewhere online or belong to someone else.
2Insist on video calls early
A real person will be willing to video chat. If someone consistently avoids video calls, it is a major red flag.
3Never send money to someone you have not met
No matter how genuine the connection feels, never send money, gift cards, or financial information to someone you have only met online.
4Watch for AI-generated photos
Look for signs of AI-generated images: asymmetric features, blurry backgrounds, strange ear shapes, or mismatched jewelry and accessories.
